"We like to say we got rid of an old Volkswagen and upgraded to a Lexus," said Mark Mays, printing press operator.
UAB Printing and Mailing recently installed a new state-of-the-art color offset digital press. While the print shop has been serving the UAB community for decades, this new press not only provides a quicker turnaround time for print jobs, its technology allows for enhanced precision of inks and color matches.
“This machine has all the bells and whistles,” said Greg Curtis, print production supervisor. “The quality of the new press is spectacular.”
A major benefit of the new press is its speed. While the old press ran 9,000 sheets an hour at its peak, the new press runs 16,000 sheets an hour. It runs CMYK process inks and features a custom Pantone option as well. The press also offers several coatings, such as Soft Touch and Aqueous. The high-performance press, combined with quick drying inks, means more efficient turnaround times are built into jobs.

Ideal jobs for the new press include projects such as magazines, annual reports, large runs of posters, pocket folders, and brochures. The press runs sheet sizes up to 25 inches by 38 inches.
UAB Printing and Mailing, located at 1720 2nd Avenue South, is open to the UAB community, including affiliated centers and organizations, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. See the new five-color offset press in action on Nov. 13 during the open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., which will feature tours of the facility, food trucks, door prizes, giveaways, and more.
