Access to personal information in the Electronic Phonebook at uab.edu/directory will be password-protected, effective immediately. All faculty, staff and students will need to log in with a BlazerID to search or access that information. Information for units and entities will not require a login.
This change is being made to protect members of the UAB community from harassment and scamming.
"We made this proactive decision to protect students, faculty and staff from predators who were using the publicly available information to perpetuate their schemes. Protecting the directory was the quickest fix to stop the most obvious way that scammers could harvest contact information," said Curtis Carver, UAB's vice president of Information Technology.
Any member of the UAB community who receives such a call should report it to UAB Police, 205-934-4434, and Information Technology at askIT@uab.edu.
