Social justice is the focus of new lecture series

Documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter will discuss the making of “Gideon’s Army” during the inaugural presentation of the UAB Social Justice Lecture Series Oct. 15.

The film follows three young public defenders in the Deep South struggling against long hours, low pay and staggering caseloads to challenge basic assumptions driving the criminal justice system. The film, which premiered on HBO this summer, was an official selection in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Screening of the documentary will begin at 6 p.m., and Porter’s lecture will follow at 7 p.m. in the UAB National Alumni House.

The Social Justice Lecture Series is an initiative jointly sponsored by UAB’s African American Studies program, Department of Justice Sciences and College of Arts and Sciences to introduce social justice topics, challenge common assumptions and foster critical thinking.
