Karen Meneses, Ph.D., has been named the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, the highest honor bestowed by the UAB Academic Health Center. She will deliver the lecture "From Bataan to Birmingham: Stories of Survivors," focusing on team community work and outreach among cancer survivors, at a seated dinner in her honor 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at The Florentine in downtown Birmingham.
“Cancer survivorship-disparities research is a topic near and dear to my heart,” Meneses said. “I have been working with cancer survivors for many decades. They teach us so much about living fuller lives after cancer.”
Meneses, professor and associate dean for Research and Scholarship in the UAB School of Nursing, is co-director of the Ph.D. in Nursing program. Meneses, who has a track record of sustained external funding and mentoring, also is the co-leader of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and principal investigator of the R25 Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program at UAB. She also leads the Young Breast Cancer Survivors Network Initiative based in the school.
Since 1964, the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award has honored individuals in the Academic Health Center of UAB who have made major contributions in education, research or service.
