The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees honored two professors with emeriti status at its June 19 meeting.

Retired Professor William C. Carter, Ph.D., was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and Professor Dellita Martin-Ogunsola, Ph.D., was named Professor Emerita of Spanish.
 
Carter, a renowned expert on French writer Marcel Proust, began his career at UAB in 1975 as an assistant professor and he chaired the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures from 1979 to 1990. Carter was a founder of the Proust collection at UAB, the third largest in the world. He retired from UAB in 2008.
 
Martin-Ogunsola teaches Spanish and Spanish literature and specializes in Latin American literature with an emphasis on writers of African ancestry in the Caribbean. She also is interim director of the UAB African-American Studies Program. She joined the UAB faculty as an assistant professor in 1976, and she chaired the department from 1993 to 2002. She is retiring this year.
