UAB Scholar to Received Honor during Obesity Week
W. Timothy Garvey, MD is the recipient of the 2017 Master of the American Board of Obesity Medicine award, presented to a physician who has made significant contributions to the science, practice and/or advancement of obesity medicine. Dr. Garvey is Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
"Dr. Garvey has been a leader and innovator in the clinical field of obesity by redefining how we assess patient risk by using a staging system,” said ABOM Board Member Dr. Robert Kushner. “He is deserving of this award in recognition of his many contributions that have advanced patient care and our understanding of obesity as a disease."
Dr. Garvey has achieved international recognition for his research in the metabolic, molecular, and genetic pathogenesis of insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity.
“I am both humbled and honored to be selected for the ABOM Master award,” said Dr. Garvey. “The ABOM has endeavored to improve medical care for obesity, and it has been my privilege to work with my colleagues in enhancing quality of life for our patients.“
Dr. Garvey received the award during a formal presentation as part of Obesity Week 2017 in Washington, D.C. Previous winners of the Master of the ABOM award include Dr. Xavier Pi-Sunyer (2016), Dr. William H. Dietz (2015), Dr. Walter Pories (2014), Dr. Donna Ryan (2014), Dr. George Blackburn (2013), and Dr. George Bray (2013).
