Nancy Borkowski 2024Nancy Borkowski, DBA, CPA, FACHE, FHFMA, distinguished professor in the UAB Department of Health Services Administration, has been named recipient of the Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).

The Filerman Prize recognizes individuals from AUPHA member programs who have made outstanding contributions to the field of healthcare management education, who have exhibited leadership in their field, and who have enriched their institutions, their students, and healthcare management through their work.

“The Filerman Prize Selection Committee was strongly supportive of Nancy Borkowski as this year’s recipient. Dr. Borkowski has made many important and influential contributions to the field, to multiple AUPHA-member programs and to AUPHA,” said Christy Harris Lemak, Ph.D., FACHE, professor, UAB School of Health Professions and chair of the 2025 Filerman Prize Selection Committee. “In particular, she has influenced countless leaders through her best-selling textbooks that have been used around the world by students at undergraduate and graduate health administration programs. In addition, Dr. Borkowski’s dedicated leadership on the AUPHA Board and in multiple ACHE local chapter organizations has guided many of the innovations we all experience and love today. Dr. Borkowski exemplifies passion and commitment to excellence in health management education. She is highly deserving of this recognition.”

“I am honored to be this year’s recipient of AUPHA’s Filerman Prize. AUPHA has had a tremendous impact on my 25-year academic career,” said Borkowski. “Since its early beginning, AUPHA has supported its members to improve the healthcare industry through academic excellence in health administration. I am thankful to be a member of the AUPHA community and appreciative of the wonderful relationships I have developed over the years with my colleagues across the country. I deeply thank my colleagues’ nomination and the committee’s recommendation for this esteem recognition.”

This is the third major honor bestowed on Borkowski this year. She received the Joseph F. Volker Award, the top honor for a faculty member in the UAB School of Health Professions, in April, and the 2024 Regent’s Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Award from the Alabama Healthcare Executives Forum in October.

Borkowski received her DBA with specializations in health services administration and accounting from Nova Southeastern University and has more than 20 years’ experience in the healthcare industry. She is a nationally recognized author with three textbooks widely used nationally and internationally in graduate and undergraduate health administration and nursing programs. And she has served in leadership roles for the AUPHA, the Academy of Management's Health Care Management Division, and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Borkowski will be recognized during the AUPHA’s Annual Meeting, June 17 – 19, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio. She is the third UAB faculty member to earn this prestigious honor. Her colleagues Christy Harris Lemak (2022) and Distinguished Professor S. Robert Hernandez, DrPH, (2006) also earned this award.
