The beginning of the school year is primetime for back-to-school shopping: weekly circulars advertise deals on notebooks, pens and papers, and dancing crayons and colored pencils fill 30-second spots in television commercials. But what happens halfway through the year, when the markers have dried up and paper stock is running low?
The UAB Staff Council is partnering with the Birmingham Education Foundation (Ed) to help Birmingham city schools beat the mid-year supply slump with a New Year, New Supplies drive Jan. 7-Feb. 14. The Ed Foundation is dedicated to increasing the number of students in the Birmingham City Schools that are on the path to college, career, and life readiness.
“Oftentimes, midway through the school year is when teachers and classrooms start noticing a real need for supplies, but that need is often overlooked,” said Dave Beeching, chair of the Staff Council. “We’re hoping to harness the power of the UAB community and give back to our local students by partnering with the Ed Foundation.”
Donations can be given to Staff Council representatives. The Ed Foundation also accepts monetary donations; checks should be made out to the Birmingham Education Foundation, with "UAB Staff Council Supply Drive" noted in the memo section.
