Dear UAB staff,
The last several weeks have brought on a great amount of uncertainty as we have all learned about COVID-19 and dealt with it in our daily lives, both personally and professionally. With many of our staff members now working remotely, all of our children out of school and all of us trying to figure out our new routines, I hope that you are making the appropriate adjustments to ensure that you and your family are protected as much as possible from this virus. It is going to be important throughout the coming weeks that we take care of both our mental and physical well-being and ensure sure that we have mechanisms in place for handling added stress and anxiety. We must remember to be strong and courageous as we settle into what is, hopefully, our temporary “new normal.”
Please remember that there are many resources available for you to receive accurate, timely and helpful information related to COVID-19 and the university’s response. For complete information, please visit uab.edu/coronavirus. This site provides information on any changes in business operations and houses links to Employee Health, the Employee Assistance Counseling Center and the Benevolent Fund. It can answer many of the questions that you may have related to the many areas of the university that will help you and your family navigate this time confidently.
At this point, we don’t know how long these measures will have to be in place, but please remember that we are all in this together. We work for one of the greatest universities and health systems in the country; our health care providers and researchers are fighting this battle on the frontlines and working to protect all of us. This situation continues to be very fluid and rapidly evolving, and we are all working hard to respond as quickly and effectively as possible and ensure that each of you are well-informed. As we often hear, one of UAB’s greatest assets is our people, and we have strong leadership that is doing their best to ensure that we have the resources that we need to weather this storm and come out on the other side stronger.
The UAB Staff Council is here to support all of our staff during this time. It is our job to advocate for UAB staff members and ensure that your voice is heard. If you have concerns or issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at
Sincerely,
Jennifer R. Breland, PhD
Chair, UAB Staff Council

Taking Charge of Your Career - Panel Discussion
The first series of the Taking Charge of Your Career series was led by Jeremy Wass from Organizational Learning and Development. The panelists consisted of Ms. Simone Alexander - Director of Finance, UAB Heersink School of Medicine; Mr. Tim Sullivan - Manager Facilities Support Services; Ms. Janice Ward- Director of Faculty Affairs; Ms. Chinara Dosse- Research Program Manager, School of Nursing. We had a great turnout with 48 attendees. Among the topics discussed by the panelist were the importance of networking, following your passion, and knowing your worth.
Taking Charge of Your Career - Career Mapping
The second component of the Taking Charge of Your Career series was the Career Mapping session also led by Jeremy Wass from Organizational Learning and Development. This time instead of a panel discussion, Ms. LaKisha Mack - Associate Dean Finance & Administration for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine was the keynote speaker. Ms. Mack discussed her career map and encouraged attendees to develop a career plan. She explained the difference between mentorship and sponsorship and provided suggestions on how to seek both.
“I received great feedback from some of the attendees on why they enjoyed the session. They said they appreciated the session because it wasn't a surface level session. Ms. Mack was ‘real’ she talked about the great things about navigating your career as well as obstacles she overcame with navigating her career,” said Shantay Williams, chair of the UAB Staff Council Staff Development Committee.

Through July 12; donations can be given to Staff Council representatives.
A trip to the grocery store nets more than a cart full of food. There’s also toilet paper, deodorant, cleaning supplies and more, and for those who are struggling financially to purchase food, the costs can be prohibitive.
To offer a helping hand to students and employees, the UAB Staff Council and the Benevolent Fund will collect toiletries through July 12 as part of the annual Blazer Kitchen Toiletry Drive, which stocks the on-campus food bank with personal hygiene items that also may be needed by patrons.
The unit that collects the most toiletry items — as measured by weight — will win 25 tickets to the UAB vs. Rice football game Oct. 5 at Legion Field. Light-weight items that come in multiples, such as toilet paper or paper towels, will be calibrated for equity to heavier items such as laundry detergent.
“We hope the UAB community can come together in the spirit of friendly competition to make a difference in the lives of our fellow Blazers in need,” said Dave Beeching, chair of the Staff Council. “Right now, the Blazer Kitchen is in dire need of feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, full-size shampoos and conditioners, shaving cream and deodorant.”
Donations can be given to Staff Council representatives. During this drive, the Blazer Kitchen hopes to acquire specific items:
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toilet paper
- Full-size shampoos and conditioners
- Shaving cream
- Deodorant
- Soap
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss
- Cotton swabs
- Dishwashing liquid
- Laundry detergent
- Paper towels
- Household cleaners
- Reusable cloth shopping bags
In its two years on campus — at its Medical Towers and Hill Student Center locations — the Blazer Kitchen has served more than 156,300 meals to 650-plus students and nearly 575 employees and more than 10,000 meals to patients in UAB Medicine clinics. To make that possible, nearly 800 volunteers, including more than 550 students, volunteered 5,600-plus hours since March 2017; sign up to volunteer through BlazerPulse.

The UAB Staff Council, in partnership with the UAB National Alumni Society's UAB Black Alumni chapter, collected hundreds of school supplies for the Birmingham Education Foundation (Ed) and Birmingham City Schools as part of its New Year, New Supplies drive, which ran Jan. 7-Feb. 14.
Boxes of disinfectant wipes, three-ring pocket folders and binders, pens, pencils and other supplies were delivered to Wylam K-8 School Feb. 21. The Ed Foundation is dedicated to increasing the number of students in the Birmingham City Schools that are on the path to college, career and life readiness.
“I would never want school supplies to be an issue when students come to school," said Ashley Samuels, principal at Wylam K-8 and current UAB doctoral student. "Paper and pencils should not be a reason they’re unable to complete their assignments."
The school has always had a policy that students in need can visit the school office to get necessary school supplies, Samuels says, and the Staff Council donations will make it possible for Wylam to continue to offer that service to students.
"The donations the Staff Council collected will ensure we continue the great work we're already doing," she continued.
Staff Council Chair Dave Beeching said he is glad UAB partnered with the Ed Foundation and Wylam in this way.
“We’re proud of our staff’s dedication to providing local students with the supplies they need to be successful,” said Staff Council Chair Dave Beeching.

The gifts have been delivered to CASA for distribution to the children. They will be overjoyed.
You have been overwhelmingly generous, and we were all touched by the way groups and individuals participated. Thank you!
