Care Team

Care Team

The UAB Care Team helps find solutions for students experiencing academic, social and crisis situations including mental health concerns. Members of the University community can report a concern for a student who might benefit from services. We review these reports to understand each student issue and the on- and off-campus resources that may guide them to success.

Authorization for Release or Exchange of Confidential Information

Authorization for Release or Exchange of Confidential Information

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records. Upon enrollment to an institution of higher education, regardless of the student’s age, FERPA rights transfer from the guardian to the student. As a result, there is limited information that Staff from Student Assistance & Support can discuss with anyone other than the student. A student must sign the “Authorization for Release or Exchange of Confidential Information” for Staff to discuss specific information and/or pertinent documentation.

Red Folder

Red Folder

Although substance abuse, sexual violence and suicide do not become a problem for most students, they are issues that affect the entire campus community. This is why it is vital that faculty and staff not only know how to recognize a student in distress, it's imperative that they know the appropriate resources to refer them to.

The UAB "Red Folder" is a resource for all faculty and staff, to help in providing support to students. The folder contains information, contact information, and instructions on how to consult with campus administrators in working with distressed students or difficult situations.

To request a hard-copy of this folder, please contact the Office of Student Assistance & Support at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (205) 975-9509.
