Blazer Express alters schedule for MLK holiday
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UAB Transportation will suspend some services Monday, Jan. 18.
The following services will not be available:
- Blazer Express
- Medicine Deck Shuttle
- Highlands Shuttle
- Motorist Assistance Roadside Service (MARS)
Employee express lot permit holders should use the 6th Avenue Parking Deck as an alternative parking location. Safety Escort will be available; use the TapRide app to request a ride.
Education Building parking lot to permanently close
With the upcoming demolition of the Education Building, Lot 16A will be permanently closed in order to construct the new UAB Science and Engineering Complex. This closure is effective Jan. 1, 2021.

Spring 2021 permits available for purchase Dec. 1
If students do not have a permit for the spring semester, they may purchase a hangtag online beginning at 8 a.m. Dec. 1
A limited number of Zone A, B, and 7 permits will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. Zone C permits will not be available for the spring semester. Please review rates and zone options before purchasing a permit.

Transportation suspends 3 Blazer Express routes, closes Zone C
After reviewing the impact of reduced bus capacities on all Blazer Express bus routes, UAB Transportation is suspending the Purple, Gold, and North Green routes for the upcoming fall semester. The buses will be reassigned to more heavily used routes ensure adequate social distancing and timely service.

Zone F-3 to temporarily close for students
In order to support critical COVID-19 testing efforts, UAB Transportation must temporarily close Zone F-3 to commuter students. We understand that this may be an inconvenience to students, but the University of Alabama at Birmingham must alter protocol across campus to provide aid and support in the current State of Emergency faced by Alabama, and the country as a whole.

Beginning Fall 2020, Zone A has been changed primarily to a residential student zone. A limited number of permits are available for commuter students. If you are a commuter student and do not see Zone A listed among your choices, it has sold out. Please choose another option.
Student permit prices lowered in response to hybrid fall semester
UAB Transportation has lowered student permit pricing as part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s hybrid model fall semester.
“We want to try to accommodate students as they navigate this hybrid model while maintaining a sustainable transportation system,” said André Davis, director of UAB Transportation. “Our permit prices reflect the fixed costs of providing parking while being mindful of the expectation that students will be on campus less.”

In accordance with the City of Birmingham ordinance and to provide the safest environment for our passengers, Blazer Express riders are required to bring and wear masks. Blazer Express drivers have been instructed not to allow passengers without face coverings to board vehicles. This requirement applies to all Blazer Express services, including Highlands Shuttle, Safety Escort, and the Deck Van Service.

For UAB students who may not be able to use a secure WiFi network, UAB is opening a parking lot on campus to provide Drive-In WiFi.
Starting Thursday, April 9, WiFi on the eduroam network will be available in Express Lot 4, located on Fifth Avenue South and 10th Street South on campus, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In response to the global COVID-19 outbreak, UAB Transportation has been taking extra steps to clean and disinfect Blazer Express buses. Regular protocol includes wiping down and disinfecting interior seating and hand rails at the end of each day, with interiors mopped and wiped down with antibacterial cleaning supplies every weekend.

Update regarding parking fees
We understand you may have questions regarding parking fees for this semester – and any possible refunds. When an unprecedented and quickly evolving disruptive event occurs, it can be difficult to have all the answers right away. Going to online/alternate learning and limited business operations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is an example.

Express Lot 4 parkers reassigned to decks
As a result of UAB’s ongoing emergency response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the need for hospital employees to have easier access to their work location, UAB Transportation is temporarily reassigning Express Lot 4 parkers to decks closer to the hospital. This will go into effect tomorrow, Thursday, March 19.
