Jordan Eagles: Blood Equality
Blood Equality was launched in 2015 in partnership with Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), FCB Health, and artist Jordan Eagles’ Blood Mirror project to address discrimination against prospective LGBTQ blood donors and allow everyone an equal opportunity to donate blood. One In Our Blood is a comprehensive, city-wide program of events and exhibitions, conceived and coordinated by Birmingham Curator Paul Barrett, building on the work of Blood Equality.
Core components of One In Our Blood include the exhibition of Jordan Eagles’ Blood Mirror sculpture at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute; an exhibition of Eagles’ Blood Equality sculptures, blood projections, and Leo Herrera’s related video documentary at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts at UAB (AEIVA); a panel discussion featuring internationally-acclaimed HIV activists at the Birmingham Museum of Art; an exhibit on Dr. Charles R. Drew, founder of modern blood banks, at the Central Birmingham Public Library; a meeting of the Blood Equality Medical Advisory Panel, including participation of the FDA division overseeing blood donation policy, at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine; and additional activities in partnership with AIDS Alabama and Birmingham AIDS Outreach.
