Titus Kaphar: Misremembered
September 22 – December 9, 2017
Artist lecture, Friday, September 22 | 5 pm
Opening reception, Friday, September 22 | 6-8 pm
Titus Kaphar utilizes the appropriation of different styles and techniques from past periods of art history to reconstruct historical narratives addressing issues of race.
Titus Kaphar: Misremembered pulls from the artist’s multiple bodies of work, including The Vesper Project, an ambitious multimedia installation that tells the complex fictional history of the Vespers, an African American family passing for white in 19th century New England.
Included works from Kaphar’s Destiny series explore the underlying racial issues found in our prison-industrial complex through painted composite portraits of women all sharing the same given name, “Destiny” and currently serving time in the criminal justice system.
Misremembered also features the Alabama debut of Kaphar’s Unfit Frame, a painting recently acquired by the Birmingham Museum of Art Collectors Circle for Contemporary Art.
