Solstice Bluegills
After my brother and I drowned
the last worm we packed to the pond,
we found wild strawberries
blinking like brake lights on the bank.
He tried first, catching fish with fruit,
and because the bluegills were as mortal as us
they couldn’t refuse the color, the sweet,
a berry offered only in June
when light is longest.
