The UAB Department of Sociology offers two undergraduate honors programs: the Sociology Honors Program and the Social Psychology Honors Program.

Sociology Honors Program

This program is designed to help prepare outstanding undergraduate majors for graduate study in sociology or a career in medical sociology. If you join the program, you will participate in a faculty-mentored research experience and be exposed to a wide range of sociological perspectives and research areas. Students who complete the program will graduate “With Honors in Sociology.”

Eligibility

  • Completion of required sociology courses — including Introduction to Sociology, Theory, and Statistics — by the end of the fall term of the year you enter the honors program.
  • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above.
  • A cumulative GPA in Sociology courses of 3.3 or above.
  • A junior- or senior-level standing (admittance to Honors Program must take place before August 1).

Requirements

  • Complete the required sociology courses.
  • Complete the two-semester Honors seminar (SOC 498/499).
  • Complete a senior-level thesis under faculty supervision.

Social Psychology Honors Program

This program is designed to help prepare outstanding undergraduate majors for graduate study in social psychology or a career in medical social psychology. If you join the program, you will participate in a faculty-mentored research experience and be exposed to a wide range of sociological perspectives and research areas. Students who complete the program will graduate “With Honors in Social Psychology.”
