Colorguard, Majorettes, Blazerette
Here at UAB, all 3 units of auxiliaries are considered sections (like trombones, percussion, or clarinets) within the Marching Blazers. Auxiliary members are also eligible for scholarships: $500 first 2 years, then $650 for the 3rd year, then $750 for the 4th year. We reward loyalty. The first set of auditions is mid-April for the following fall.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the UAB Marching Blazers! We are coming off another great season, and it is with great excitement and anticipation that we now shift our focus to the 2025 season!!! Marching into Protective Stadium, taking the field for performance, and of course cheering on our Blazers together alongside our fans, faculty, and students, will be moments to remember for a lifetime... Auditions for all UAB Auxiliaries will take place on Saturday March 22nd (Majorettes & Color Guard) and Sunday, March 23rd (Blazerettes-Dance). All auditions will take place in the UAB Campus Rec which is located on campus along University Boulevard. All auditions are closed to the public. Only marching band directors/staff and the judges panel will be allowed. In addition, only tryout candidates will be allowed inside the Campus Rec on the day of the auditions.
Majorette Requirements

Audition Process
In addition to the successful completion of the eligibility and registration requirements, the Majorette audition process is comprised of 4 categories: Individual routine, Basic requirements, Across the floor movement & Group routine.
Individual routine:
This is your time to show the judges what you do best! The routine should showcase your ability to successfully execute a prepared routine. You will be judged not only on your twirling skills but also on your showmanship, body technique, professionalism, entertainment value, and physical fitness. Multiple baton work should be included in your routine, as well as dance twirl type steps. The choreography for your individual routine should demonstrate and showcase your twirling and performance strengths! Entertainment value is super important! The routine time limit is 2:30 minutes. NO props are allowed. It is important to choose music that is engaging and tasteful. Please note that music that is currently popular on the radio is not always the best choice. - Vertical 2-turn catch left
- Horizontal 2 spin
- Vertical 3-turn
- Toss illusion
- Toss cartwheel
- Splits (both R & L)
- 3-baton showers/juggles (must do at least 7 consecutively). These will be performed individually for the judging panel.
Field Movement:
All tryout candidates will learn an across the floor combination to perform for the judges. Movement and body carriage are integral parts of every performance, so it is important to evaluate these components at our tryouts. All candidates will be sent a video to learn the Across the Floor Movement sequence on Monday, March 17th. The sequence will include marching, jazz runs and other field movement techniques. Please note, this sequence will not be taught the day of auditions so all candidates should prepare accordingly.
Group Routine:
This routine will be taught the day of tryouts. This allows the judges to see how well an auditionee can adapt to learning routines quickly. This is also an opportunity to see how well those auditioning work and perform together. This routine will be performed in small groups determined the day of the tryout. During the time of learning and performing this routine, judges are looking for quality technique, an ability to move past a mistake in a timely manner, a positive attitude and the overall performance abilities of each tryout candidate.

All new prospective tryout candidates must submit the letter of evaluation. This evaluation should be filled out by the Band Director, or Auxiliary Coordinator. In the event, and only in the event, that a candidate is not a member of their school’s marching band, a letter of evaluation may be given by their studio instructor. Your individual routine should ultimately showcase your skills as a dancer and highlight your performance abilities. Aim to impress the judges and show them what you do best! You will be judged not only on your dance technique, but also your showmanship, entertainment value, execution of demonstrated skills, and physical fitness. The routine time limit is 1:30. This routine can be performed to the music of your choice, but please make sure the music is tasteful and contains no profanity or questionable lyrics.

Audition Process
In addition to the successful completion of the eligibility and registration requirements, the UAB Guard audition process is comprised of 4 categories: Individual routine, Basic requirements, Across the floor movement & Group routines.
Individual routine:
This is your time to show the judges what you do best! The individual routine should showcase your ability to successfully execute a prepared routine. You will be judged not only on your guard skills, but also on your showmanship, body technique, professionalism, entertainment value, and physical fitness. The choreography for your individual routine should demonstrate and showcase your performance strengths. Entertainment value is super important. The routine time limit is 1:30-2:00 minutes. At least one minute of the routine must be on flag. Any candidate interested in a rifle position must demonstrate rifle skills for at least 30 seconds of their individual routine. Those selected will have a second rifle tryout at band camp to determine the final rifle roster. It is important to choose music that is engaging and tasteful. Music should not include profanity, or questionable lyrics.

Movement and body carriage are integral parts of every performance, so it is important to evaluate these components at our tryouts. All candidates will be sent a video to learn the Across the Floor Movement sequence on Saturday, April 8. The sequence will include marching, jazz runs and other field movement techniques. Please note, this sequence will not be taught the day of auditions so all candidates should prepare accordingly. A flag will be provided to you for this portion of the audition.
Group Routine:
This routine will be taught the day of tryouts. This allows the judges to see how well an auditionee can adapt to learning routines quickly. This is also an opportunity to see how well those auditioning work and perform together. This routine will be performed in small groups determined the day of the tryout. During the time of learning and performing this routine, judges are looking for quality technique, an ability to move past a mistake in a timely manner, a positive attitude and the overall performance abilities of each tryout candidate. In addition, all guard candidates will learn a traditional pregame song the day of the tryout. A flag will be provided to you for this portion of the tryout.
