The first annual Dr. Perng-Ru Liu Memorial Lecture was a resounding success.
Held Friday, October 20, 2023, the program for dentists featured Luiz H. Gonzaga, D.D.S., M.S. Gonzaga is a clinical associate professor at the University of Florida Center for Implant Dentistry. He spoke on implant rehabilitation of the edentulous jaw and edentulous risk assessment.
Named for Dr. Perng-Ru Liu in recognition of his eternal service to the School of Dentistry and the many lives – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – he touched, UAB Continuing Dental Education established this annual lecture dedicated to his memory.
Dr. Liu provided leadership in prosthodontics and comprehensive dentistry at the UAB School of Dentistry for more than thirty years. Committed to continuing dental education and lifelong learning, he finished out each CE year by providing multiple educational opportunities for both dentists and dental hygienists.
Ann Marie Karaki, director of UAB Continuing Dental Education, said that when thinking of a way to remember Dr. Liu and honor his commitment to the dental community, an annual lecture ‘just felt right.’
“Dr. Liu was such a cornerstone of our CE program,” says Karaki. “Having Dr. Liu’s friends and family attend our first seminar made the day even more special.”
Attendees were joined by Dr. Liu's wife, Lynne and his son, Dr. Stephen Liu, among others. As an introduction, Dr. Len Mueninghoff shared heartwarming stories about Dr. Liu.
The group also took time to observe and celebrate the week of the UAB School of Dentistry's 75th Anniversary.
