Daniel Givan, DMD, Ph.D., FACP, has been elected vice president of the American College of Prosthodontists, the flagship organization of the specialty of prosthodontics. A professor of restorative sciences in the UAB School of Dentistry, he also diplomate to the American Board of Prosthodontics. Dr. Givan is slated to become president of the College in 2027.
Having joined the UAB faculty in 1998, Givan has been actively involved in both clinical research and applications of technology to dentistry in both the graduate and undergraduate curricula. He has lectured nationally and internationally with emphasis in occlusion, implantology, and digital dentistry.
At the School of Dentistry, Givan serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Director of Digital Dentistry and Clinical Laboratory Services, and Director of Prosthodontic Graduate Implantology. In 2023, he was named third holder of The University of Alabama School of Dentistry Alumni Association Endowed Professorship.
Givan has served as the elected chair of the school faculty multiple times and remains active in policy and shared governance. He currently serves as chair-elect of the UAB Faculty Senate.
In addition to holding many leadership positions in the American College of Prosthodontists, he is a member of numerous professional organizations including the International Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Education Association, the Academy of Osseointegration, and the American Dental Association.
A 2020-21 fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute, he has been the recipient of various awards including the 2013 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2022 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Support of UAB and Shared Governance. He is also a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
Givan received his dental degree from the University of Mississippi in 1992 and afterwards completed a hospital dentistry residency followed by a specialty residency in Prosthodontics at UAB. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and has earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with emphasis in dental materials from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
