COVID 19 Testing:

While free testing is no longer available to employees, ALL UAB employees may call the UAB COVID-19 Call Center at (205) 975-1881 to make an appointment at UAB Urgent Care for testing. The CDC has a testing site locator available here if unable to make it to UAB Urgent Care. Home test kits are also widely available at retail pharmacies, or testing can be coordinated at a local urgent care or a primary care physician’s office.

Reporting a positive test and return-to-work guidance:

  • UAB Healthcare Workers (employed or working in areas associated with UAB Medicine, UAB Dental School, or UAB Optometry): Guidelines for those in the healthcare setting are different than the community. Those who test positive should fill out the online COVID-19 and Flu reporting form, which will provide automated email guidance on when they can return to work. A FAQ detailing this process is available here. Employees do not need specific return-to-work clearance from UAB Employee Health, but should follow the appropriate isolation guidelines given to them. In general, HCWs can resume normal work activities when all the following are true:
    • At least 5 days have passed since symptoms first appeared (day 0), and
    • At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, and
    • Symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) have improved.

  • UAB Campus Employees: follow the CDC isolation guidelines outlined on their website here. While there is no specific reporting requirement for campus employees, employees should remain at home when sick, and can resume your normal work activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
    • Your symptoms are getting better overall, and
    • You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication)
