  • How to Complete an Online Application
    1. Complete the online graduate application through the UAB Graduate School online admission system.
      • Admissions Process Overview
      • Click on the APPLY NOW tab to start the application process. The application will ask you to choose your degree program.
      • For which of the following are you applying? Masters (NOT MSEM)
      • What is your intended program of study? Master of Engineering (MEng).
      • Format: Online
      • What is your concentration? Advanced Safety Engineering and Management
      • Term: Semester and year
      • The online application will guide you through the process, and we can give you updates on the status of your application along the way.
      • We follow the UAB Academic Calendar. The academic calendar year configuration is the calendar year of fall semester + the calendar year of spring semester (i.e. 2023-2024 for fall semester 2023 and spring and summer semesteres 2024.)
    2. Three recommendations required. One of the recommendations must be from a current, or former direct supervisor.
      • Enter contact information for individuals who will write letters of recommendation.
        • Notification emails will be automatically sent to the identified recommenders.
    3. Submit one Personal Essay (1-2 pages, include a summary of your academic interests, career goals, relevant safety background experience, and why you want to pursue the ASEM degree).
    4. Submit your resume/CV as an attachment with your online application.
    5. Submit transcripts for all post-secondary institutions, including community colleges, high school dual-enrollment, and military credit.
      • Unofficial transcripts may be utilized for the application review process.
        • Transcripts forwarded from a student’s email account are not official.
      • If admitted, by the middle of your first semester in ASEM, the Graduate School must receive one official transcript, only from these institutions:
        • from each post-secondary institution where the student earned a degree and
        • for any coursework taken after the awarding of a student’s bachelor’s degree (e.g. as a post-bacc or graduate student).
      • Official transcripts must come directly from the institution to UAB.
        • Transcripts are considered unofficial unless they are issued in one of the following ways:
          • Electronic transcripts emailed directly from your school’s Registrar’s Office to the UAB Graduate School (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
          • Paper transcripts bearing a University seal mailed directly to the Graduate School, from the issuing school’s Registrar’s Office.
          • Paper transcripts submitted by the student in a sealed envelope bearing a University signature or stamp across the seal.

    7. Submit your non-refundable application fee payment (credit and debit cards are acceptable payment methods).

    International students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit English proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS/PTEA) that meet the Graduate School minimum score requirements. Go to: www.uab.edu/gradadmissions/apply/international-applicants for details.

    If more information is needed, based on the application review committee’s assessment of your experience and qualification, applicants may be required to participate in a brief web conference interview.

  • Admission Requirements
    An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited school
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
      • Applicants not satisfying the GPA requirement and/or holding a degree from a nationally accredited school may receive admission on a provisional basis subject to assessment and recommendation of the program director.
    • Undergraduate degree does not have to be in engineering
    Experience in safety or a safety-related field.
    • If you are not in a direct safety role (such as a safety manager or safety specialist), yet are directly responsible for safety decision-making and implementation (such as a plant manager), and have experience with safety decision-making and implementation, you may also apply for admission.

  • International Applicants

    International applicants must provide documentation showing they have earned the equivalent of a 4-year bachelor’s degree from the United States to be eligible for admission consideration. To learn more about this requirement, visit the International Applicants section of the UAB Graduate School website and select the tab Translated Transcripts and Proof of Degree.

     

  • Readmission Applicants

    If you are looking to return to ASEM, you may be eligible for UABs streamlined Readmission Application. Students who have not registered for ASEM classes for three (3) consecutive semesters are changed to inactive student status and must apply for readmission before they will be able to register for ASEM courses again.
