Alpha Sigma Mu

Alpha Sigma Mu

Alpha Sigma Mu is an international professional honor society dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the materials science and engineering field. Each spring, undergraduate and graduate students from the MSE department are inducted into the UAB chapter of ASMu.

    How it Works for You

    At the recommendation of the faculty, membership invitations are extended to materials engineering students with junior standing or above who are in the top 25% of their class based on GPA, and to graduate students in the top 50% by GPA or who show exceptional promise as a researcher. Among other activities, ASMu members provide tutoring services to underclassmen in the department.


American Foundry Society

American Foundry Society

The American Foundry Society (AFS) is an organization for students and professionals interested in the metalcasting industry. UAB has a very active student chapter of AFS, which receives significant support from the local professional AFS chapter. The UAB chapter participates in a variety of hands-on activities occur throughout the year, including Open Foundry Day, a regional student casting competition, and outreach to local schools through Foundry in a Box demonstrations.

    How it Works for You

    Student members are always welcome at the monthly Birmingham AFS chapter dinners. Additional scholarship, internship and employment networking opportunities are available to students through the Foundry Education Foundation and College Industry Conference (CIC), held annually in Chicago.

ASHRAE

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, formerly known as the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (now, just ASHRAE) is an International professional society focused on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the building technology industry.

    How it Works for You

    ASHRAE holds two conferences each year to provide a forum for the manufacturing and trade side come together with the research and governance side to exchange ideas and advance the building science. ASHRAE also publishes 4 major trade and research journals: ASHRAE Journal, HVAC&R Research, ASHRAE Transactions, and High Performance Buildings. Additionally, ASHRAE offers several certifications which are highly valued by the industry. Among those are Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and Health-Care Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certifications.

Material Advantage is the largest national professional society for students in the materials science and engineering field. It is an umbrella organization for four prominent professional societies:

    How it Works for You

    The UAB chapter of Material Advantage works closely with the AFS student group to organize plant tours, speakers, outreach activities and social events. In addition, Material Advantage membership provides access to a variety of technical publications, scholarship opportunities, travel grants and conference activities. Recent chapter activities have included an undergraduate student speaking contest, students traveling to Washington D.C. for Congressional Visit Days, and competition in the Materials Bowl quiz tournament at the TMS Annual Meeting.

Pi Tau Sigma is the International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society. Members are chosen on a basis of sound engineering ability, scholarship (upper 35%), personality, and probable future success in their chosen field of Mechanical Engineering.
