The Provost’s Awards for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad honors University of Alabama at Birmingham faculty members who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to engaging UAB’s undergraduate students in education abroad experiences.
The awards are based on outstanding accomplishments in teaching and mentoring as demonstrated by any or all of the following:
- Actively and effectively guides students’ research, creative, or service projects; and personal development
- Establishes clear expectations and maintains high standards for academic performance
- Inspires and assists undergraduates in developing their own scholarly profiles and in disseminating the results of their work as appropriate (e.g., meetings, conferences, committees, performances, publications, UAB Expo)
- Actively prepares students for success in applications to graduate and professional schools or professional careers

Award
Each selected faculty member honored receives a cash award and a plaque that recognizes his or her achievement at the UAB Expo Awards Ceremony in April.

Eligibility
All UAB faculty members are eligible.

Selection Committee
The Offices of Education Abroad will review nominations and make recommendations to the Senior Vice Provost for the award.
Deadline and Procedure for Nomination
Nominations must be submitted by the end of March. Any UAB student, faculty, staff, or community member may make a nomination by completing and submitting a short paragraph describing why the nominee is deserving of the award.

2023: Dr. James B. McClintock and Dr. Ken Marion
The 2023 Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad was awarded to Dr. James B. McClintock, University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology; and Dr. Ken Marion, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology.

2022: Dr. Lisa McCormick and Meena Nabavi, MPH
The 2022 Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad was awarded to Dr. Lisa McCormick, Professor of Health Policy and Organization and Senior Associate Dean for Academics and Public Health Practice; and Meena Nabavi, MPH, Program Director II in the School of Public Health.

The 2020 Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad was awarded to Dr. Tina Kempin Reuter, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and the Department of Anthropology, Director of the Institute for Human Rights.
