You can enroll in classes part-time while at UAB as a J-1 Research Scholar as long as your primary activity continues to be teaching and/or research as described on your Form DS-2019. All postdoctoral scholars must enroll in a research ethics class and will need to email isss@uab.edu to request that the registration hold be lifted since the class registration system and our immigration database do not communicate. You do not need to send any more documentation for us to lift the registration hold.

You are also welcome and encouraged to take advantage of the wide array of English language enrichment offered at UAB, including:

• Free Community English Classes once a week.
• Private tutoring with one of our Learning Resource Center tutors –email isss@uab.edu for more information or visit the LRC page.
• Enrollment in recreational English classes.
