UAB Personalized Medicine is intended to serve as a centerpiece for development of an integrated research, educational, and clinical program. The major components and goals are to:
1) implement genomic and proteomic tests for risk assessment, diagnosis, and pharmacogenetic analysis and provide decision-support tools at the point of care;
2) strategically deploy whole genome sequencing approaches to gene discovery and diagnosis, paving the way towards routine use of genome sequencing in clinical care;
3) provide education to clinicians and investigators on genomic and proteomic approaches in medicine;
4) monitor outcomes and conduct studies of efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
