UAB IT has launched a pilot for an international travel laptop loaner program, which is designed to help keep research data safe while members of the UAB community are traveling abroad.
The laptop loaner program provides:
Easy Setup
After powering on the laptop follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup. You will need your BlazerID and password to access this device, as well as Duo 2-factor authentication. If you run into problems setting up your device, contact AskIT (see "Get Help", below).
Personal Virtual Desktop
You are assigned a Personal Virtual Desktop with researcher resources (8 CPU, 32GB RAM, 128 GB SSD) along with access to on-premise resources (mapped drives, mapped printers, file storage). All you will need is an internet connection for access.
Take your software with you
Microsoft Office Applications are installed on the laptop and on your virtual desktop. Faculty and staff have access to free Adobe Acrobat Pro, and there are a limited number of free licenses for Adobe Creative Cloud as well. Learn more about free or discounted software options at uab.edu/software.
Virtual meeting capability
Zoom and Microsoft Teams desktop applications are installed on the virtual desktop.
No internet connection? No worries!
Run software, save your data to the laptop, and transfer it to your file storage when you return to UAB. All data on the laptop is encrypted. Be sure to transfer your data before you return it.
