The CNC Glia Biology Pillar goals are to promote the discovery of novel treatments for glial biology and related disorders through basic and translational research, to teach scientists and clinicians about these diseases, and to facilitate the application of these discoveries to clinical care of patients.
Over the past two decades, glia biology and pathobiology at UAB has grown to a group of 13 laboratories and a staff of about 50 and growing. Active research projects are addressing glioblastomas and other brain tumors, ALZ, PD, Huntington’s MS, ALS, Rett Syndrome, autism, epilepsy, pain and addiction, CNS injury and repair, psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, etc.,) as all these areas find glia cells as major or minor parts of the story.
Activities/Resources
- Glial Biology Works in Progress Meeting every 3rd Friday at noon – a journal club that focuses on molecular mechanisms of glial-related disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
- Resources repository for members to share in collaborations. Ask Pillar leaders Anita and Michelle for access.
