Doctoral and fellowship trainees come to Birmingham from throughout the national and international scientific community, and participate in a research environment that emphasizes dedicated mentorship, rigorous training, and interdisciplinary innovation. A full curriculum in Graduate Biomedical Sciences (www.uab.edu/gbs) with the support of over 350 well-qualified mentors are available to graduate students and research fellows on our campus. Students from all eight thematic areas (Biochemistry & Structural Biology, Cell, Molecular, & Developmental Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Genomics, & Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Pathobiology, Pharmacology, & Physiology, Neuroscience, and Cancer Biology) can select mentors and work on CF-related projects
UAB currently has 24 active training grants and fellowships from the NIH with an additional 6 pending. Several of these are focused in Pulmonary, Digestive, and CF-related research. In addition, the University has 98 active training activity awards from other funding sources (e.g., Foundations, Department of Education). Further, UAB has achieved continuous high ranking among research-intensive universities for extramural funding and research productivity, and as a whole ranks among the nation’s top twenty public institutions in federal research support. External grants for junior investigators have grown significantly (e.g., UAB has 39 active K awards from NIH). In 2013, UAB was ranked first among academic institutions in the United States for its Postdoctoral training programs, and postdoctoral trainees receive substantial support (e.g., counseling and career development courses such as lab management, grant writing, and job skills) from the UAB Office of Postdoctoral Education.
