This is a 1-year ACGME-accredited fellowship designed to provide comprehensive training in all program requirements of micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology. Refer to the ACGME Program Requirements document for a complete description of the definition and scope of this subspecialty that includes Mohs micrographic surgery, general dermatologic surgery, and cutaneous oncology. Additional exposure to head and neck surgery, oculoplastics, dermatopathology, ASDS preceptorships, and others is available. The fellow is expected to complete various scholarly projects including didactic talks to nursing personnel and residents, publications, and presentations at national meetings. 

Requirements

Candidates must be board-eligible or certified in Dermatology.

Application Process 

The fellowship accepts applications only through the SF Match. Applications are due August 1, 2023. If chosen for the second round of review, candidates will complete a secondary application which will be due in October. Candidates will receive that application via their SF Match inbox. 

Interviews this year will be virtual and are schedule to take place November 1, 2023 and November 3, 2023. The program usually interviews around 18 candidates for its one fellowship position. 

Interviewees will be required to upload a suture video that requires at least the following elements: 

  1. Drawing/surgical marking
  2. Excision
  3. Undermining
  4. 2 buried sutures
  5. 2 epidermal sutures

The program does allow for interested applicants to come and observe with faculty for one day in the summer or early fall. Please contact the program director for more information. 

Salary and Benefits

Salary levels are commensurate with the fellow’s postgraduate year and are set by the UAB GME Office. There is also a fellow book stipend.
