In thInfPractice Family Medicine in the Heart of Birmingham
In the spring of 2022, the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine and Cahaba Medical Care launched an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency track at UAB Hospital-Highlands in Birmingham, AL. The Highlands track, launched through the Cahaba Family Medicine Residency, provides a wide range of training opportunities, clinical experiences, mentorship from talented faculty and engagement with the local community.
The Highlands program is a 4-4-4 track on the UAB campus, focused on resident education and scholarship in key areas including:
- Digital health
- Precision medicine
- Health promotion (exercise, nutrition and mental health care)
- Interprofessional care
- Cultural awareness and social determinants of health
- Population health.
Cahaba Medical Care
Cahaba Medical Care is a Community Health Center (FQHC) with 22 locations in central Alabama serving Bibb, Perry, Chilton, Wilcox and Jefferson Counties. It is a HRSA "Gold Award" Top 10% Quality, and six-time winner of HRSA's Access Enhancer Award and Health Equity Enhanced Award.
The Cahaba-UAB Family Medicine Residency is a 20-20-20 Family Medicine Residency with three campuses or FMC tracks in addition to the Highlands track, including:
- Rural track, in Centreville, AL
- Urban track in West End, Birmingham
- Frontier track in Perry County and Wilcox County
