We offer two training experiences: the Categorical Program, which leads to board eligibility in internal medicine after completion of a three-year residency program, and the Preliminary Program, which provides one year of internal medicine training prior to further residency training in other areas of specialty. Approximately seven Categorical Program positions and four Preliminary Program positions are offered each year.

All our residency positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program. Only electronic application submitted through ERAS are considered.

Application Consideration Criteria

  • Graduated from an ACGME-approved medical school within five years of application
  • Passed USMLE Step I on the first attempt. Any application received with a failed score is subject to additional review
  • Passed USMLE Step 2 CK on the first attempt with a minimum score of 200
  • International Applicants must have a ECFMG Certificate by April 1 of the application year

Application Requirements

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • USMLE or COMLEX scores
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation (Dean’s Letter)
  • Copy of Medical School Diploma and Transcript
  • ECFMG Certificate (for International Medical Graduates)

Our program requires all applicants to complete a supplemental ERAS application.

The additional information collected will help our program staff learn more about applicants’ medical education journey, including more meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences, and will help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission.

This supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform that is separate from the MyERAS application and must be completed between Sept. 1-30.

Please bookmark the supplemental ERAS application section of the AAMC website to find the latest information, FAQs, and resources.

International Medical Graduates Policies

Our program only sponsors J-1 visas.

Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must possess a currently valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, or have a full unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which they are training.

International medical graduates may access ERAS through the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Canadian medical school graduates should contact the Canadian Resident Matching Service for ERAS.

We prefer IMG candidates have documented at least one month of U.S. clinical experience and have at least one letter of recommendation from a physician who can attest to this clinical experience. Research is not considered U.S. clinical experience.

Selection Policy

Academic records, letters of recommendation, USMLE or COMLEX scores, supplemental application and applicants’ personal statement are considered in choosing applicants to interview for our program. Due to a high volume of applications, we are very unlikely to extend interview offers to applicants who do not signal our program. UAB is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution dedicated to providing equal opportunities and equal access to all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, ethnic or national origin, sex (including pregnancy), genetic information, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and veteran’s status. As required by Title IX, UAB prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity that it operates. Individuals may report concerns or questions to UAB’s Assistant Vice President and Senior Title IX Coordinator. The Title IX notice of nondiscrimination is located at uab.edu/titleix.

All interviews are extended through the program's Selection and Review Committee. We use Thalamus for scheduling and re-scheduling interviews. All information will be sent to you via Thalamus if you are invited for an interview with our program.
