The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program at UAB leverages internal investments from the Department of Medicine and philanthropic support from its alumni to provide the best possible experience for today’s trainees.
The Internal Medicine Excellence in Education Fund
A spendable fund to support Internal Medicine residents through:
- Educational materials – books, but also apps, subscriptions and other electronic media – relevant to their training; in essence, a “21st Century Book Fund”
- Travel/registration funds for professional/scientific conferences
- Activities to promote camaraderie among the residents
- Other program-related priorities as determined by the Program Director; funds to be disbursed as his or her discretion
The Legacy Endowed Fund
A planned endowment – with initial gifts from Dr. George H. Karam (CMR 1981) and Dr. Craig L. Coe (IMR 1983) – to support activities aimed at instilling in current-day Internal Medicine Residents the principles on which Dr. Harrison focused during his many years as a leader in medical practice and medical education. Those principles -- thinking, listening, and understanding; humor and analogy; moral and mental discipline – are the cornerstone of Dr. Harrison’s legacy to UAB and to the countless physicians who have been influenced by his example.
Examples of how the fund’s spendable earnings would be used include:
- A proposed annual dinner for rising PGY3s, featuring remarks by legends of UAB Internal Medicine and the opportunity for residents to share their reflections about what it means to be a UAB IM physician.
- Visiting lecturers/speakers on topics relevant to the practice of Internal Medicine and Dr. Harrison’s ideals
