Department of Neurosurgery Laboratories

Leavenworth Lab

The laboratory headed by Jianmei Wu Leavenworth, M.D., Ph.D., focuses on the translational immunology research spanning from neuroinflammation to neuro-oncology to cancer immunotherapies, which are supported by the internal and extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the US. Department of Defense (DoD).

Trainees will undertake projects to explore the impact of immune regulation on the CNS inflammation and malignant tumors, particularly glioma, and to develop better therapeutic approaches to these disorders. Trainees will also have the opportunity to generate collaborative interactions through the multi-disciplinary Program in Immunology at UAB and receive support from the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and Center from the Clinical and Translational Science.



Van Meir Lab

The Molecular Neuro-Oncology laboratory headed by Erwin G. Van Meir, Ph.D., has an established track record of translational research in the field of cancer and applicants can access the PIs google scholar profile to familiarize themselves with the lab’s research. The laboratory is located in the NCI-designated O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, which provides an outstanding and stimulating scientific environment with multiple supportive core facilities and shared resources.
