UAB Ophthalmology welcomes new faculty - Dr. Krupa Patel and Dr. Mehdi Tavakoli.

For the first time, UAB Ophthalmology has successfully combined their annual symposium with the department's graduation banquet that made for a weekend of learning, insight, and celebration.

Bob Phillips, M.D., Class of 1976, was honored during the UAB Ophthalmology Graduation Celebration with the Distinguished Alumnus Award on May 31, 2019.

According to the latest figures available through Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is ranked No. 5 in the country in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding, with over $10.6 million in NIH grant support during fiscal year 2018. 

Brian Samuels, M.D., Ph.D., the Dennis Endowed Professor and Glaucoma Divsion Director, and colleage Felipe Mederos, M.D., Ph.D., are featured in Glaucoma Today for a co-written article titled "Making the Most of SD-OCT for Enhanced Diagnostic Accuracy." 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences recently hosted the second annual Southeastern Vision Research Conference (SEVRC) to celebrate and share excellence in vision science.

Three researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham are working to transform the treatment landscape for patients living with glaucoma.

Christine A. Curcio, Ph.D., the White-McKee Endowed Professor in Ophthalmology, spoke at a Congressional Briefing entitled Understanding the "Dry" Form of AMD to Develop Effective Treatments on September 27, 2018. 

Christopher A. Girkin, M.D., MSPH, EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Chair, and Massimo A. Fazio, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences have received a 4-year, $1,846,550 grant from the National Eye Institute (R01, Multi-PI) to explore the biomechanical behavior of the lamina cribrosa in the living human eye that is critical to the pathogenesis of glaucoma, pappiledema (swelling of the nerve due to increase intracranial pressure) and the visual impairment and intracrainla pressure syndrome experienced by some of our astronauts.

In 2013, several local female ophthalmologists, including UAB faculty members, decided to get together for dinner. They didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of a local group known as the WOOs (Women of Ophthalmology).

J. Crawford Downs, PhD, Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has co-edited the first book written about the growing field of ocular biomechanics. The 36-chapter book is co-edited by downs, Cynthia J. Roberts, PhD, and William J. Dupps, MD, PhD. 

Harold Skalka, M.D, Professor and former Chair of UAB Ophthalmology, has retired from the department. Dr. Skalka served as Chair from 1981 to 1997. 

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences welcomed 5 incoming residents from across the country.

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held its graduation ceremony on June 23, 2018 at the UAB Alumni House. Each of the five graduating residents, and five graduating fellows, were joined by family and friends.

The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held an extremely successful 2018 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa on May 18-19. This was the 19th year of the symposium and included resident, faculty, and featured lectures on glaucoma, IOL Calculations, and Toric Lenses. 

On June 29, 2018, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital hosted the inaugural Callahan Night at the Ballpark. This was an event for faculty, staff, and their families to come together for food, fun, and a ballgame. The event was held at Regions Field and the Birmingham Baron’s hosted the Jackson Generals. 

Massimo Fazio, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and his colleagues Luigi Bruno, PhD, and Gianfranco Bianco, PhD, developed a dynamic Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer (d-ESPI) for measuring time-dependent, three-dimensional surface displacements of ocular tissue with nanometric precision.  

Associate Professor Brian C. Samuels, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Glaucoma Division and chief of staff of the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, has been chosen to be the inaugural holder of the Dennis Endowed Professorship in Glaucoma Research by the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama in April 2018.  

Professor Christine A. Curcio, Ph.D., was named as the inaugural holder of the of the White-McKee Endowed Professorship in Ophthalmology by the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama in April 2018.
