The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery traveled to Destin, Florida, last month for the annual meeting of the Alabama Orthopaedic Society, the Mississippi Orthopaedic Society and the Florida Orthopaedic Society.
UAB Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Shawn Gilbert, M.D., was named president-elect of the AOS at this year’s meeting, held May 16-18 at the Henderson Beach Resort, while UAB Orthopaedics alumnus James Worthen, M.D., served as the event’s Alabama chair.
A number of UAB orthopaedic surgery residents also presented at the meeting, including Adam Almaguer, M.D., Allison Hunter, M.D., and Scott Mabry, M.D.
At the events on Saturday, Mabry was also named the winner of both first and second place in the society’s annual Chestley L. Yelton Resident Essay Competition for his respective papers, “Does surgeon fellowship training influence outcomes in hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture?” and “Comparison of direct anterior to posterior approach for total hip arthroplasty in femoral neck fractures.”
These two papers also feature orthopaedic surgery resident Jeff Pearson, M.D., in their author lists, alongside Assistant Professor Elie Ghanem, M.D., who served as both projects’ principal investigator. Assistant Professor Johnathan Quade, M.D., and resident Thompson McMurtrie, M.D., were also listed as co-authors on the second-prize paper.
