Overview

The Renal Biopsy Laboratory in the Division of Anatomic Pathology receives approximately 750 renal biopsies per year from nephrologist at UAB and across the state of Alabama. It also provides consultation services to our UAB Pathology outreach services (CPPP), Children’s of Alabama and Birmingham VA Medical center.

To completely evaluate the biopsy, one portion is processed for light microscopy, another portion is processed for electron microscopy and a third portion for evaluation by immunofluorescence microscopy. Each of these studies is important to examine the biopsy for specific types of medical kidney diseases and transplant rejection. Since, UAB has one of the busiest Kidney Transplantation Program in US (average 300 transplants per year) the majority of the specimen are from transplant patients where urgent diagnosis may be needed to guide therapy. In such instances, processing can be expedite and the diagnosis communicated within hours of receipt of the biopsy specimen.

In addition to the clinical services, renal pathology faculty also participates in various teaching activities for nephrology fellows and pathology residents and collaborate with nephrologist at UAB and outside UAB in various research activities.
