The UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is expanding its footprint in the community to accommodate more patients. Three PM&R providers – Drs. Mark Carter, Dale Colorado, and Johan Latorre – are now accepting patients at the new UAB Medical West, an affiliate of the UAB Health System, in addition to the main UAB campus locations.
PM&R celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony of UAB Medical West in July and are excited to have the opportunity to serve the citizens west of Birmingham.
The new state-of-the-art, full-service hospital opened to patients on August 3, 2024. The building includes a 412,000-square-foot, nine-story hospital with 200 beds and a 127,000-square-foot, seven-story medical office building. The facility features a new surgical and endoscopy suite, including robotic surgery and 12 operating rooms, state-of-the-art imaging technology, and more intensive care beds.
Dale Colorado, D.O., MPH
Dr. Colorado is Associate Professor and Vice Chair in the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). He also serves as PM&R Residency Program Director and Medical Director for Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Colorado is a team physician for UAB Athletics. Dr. Colorado's clinical interests include the evaluation and non-operative management of all musculoskeletal injuries, with special interests in sports related injuries, therapeutic spine and peripheral joint injections, orthobiologics/regenerative treatments, performing arts related injuries, electrodiagnostics, and musculoskeletal/neuromuscular ultrasound,

Johan Latorre, M.D., MS
Dr. Latorre joined UAB in 2022 as an Assistant Professor in the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). He is a part of UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine team. Clinically, Dr. Latorre specializes in non-operative orthopedic, musculoskeletal, and sports medicine. He also performs ultrasound guided procedures. He is passionate about treating athletes at all levels and abilities. Besides providing excellent clinical care to his patient's at UAB, he is also the head team physician for the men's and women's tennis teams at the university and a team physician for Team USA Wheelchair Rugby.

Markus Carter, D.O.
Dr. Johnny M. Carter has been with the UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since 2005. With a primary teaching interest of musculoskeletal medicine, electrodiagnostic medicine, interventional pain medicine, and PRP injection therapy, Dr. Carter also has extensive previous experience with sports medicine as well. Dr. Carter is a 4-time recipient of the Samuel L. Stover MD Excellence in Teaching Award.

The new facility is designed around nature. Each floor is represented by flora native to the state of Alabama, with photography and artwork throughout the hospital created by local Alabama artists and curated by Gallery Services. It features a pond with walking trails, floor-to-ceiling windows in patient rooms, rocking chairs and fireplaces.
