General surgery residents pursuing two years of research training are eligible to apply for the NIH Loan Repayment Program. Residents pursuing research training are required to apply for intramural and extramural funding to support their research endeavors. Scholarships and awards are available from several national surgical societies.

Association of VA Surgeons
The Association of VA Surgeons is pleased to announce the AVAS Resident Research Scholarship. This is a one-year award available to general surgical or surgical subspecialty residents with a faculty mentor who has at least a 5/8ths VA appointment. Research proposals in clinical outcomes, health services research, education research, basic science or translational research will be considered. The award is for $25,000 for one year.

American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons
To attract General Surgery Residents into the field of colon and rectal surgery by providing opportunities to engage in clinical or laboratory-based research focused on diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The grant funds $20,000 per year for 1 year. An opportunity for a second year of funding is available via a competitive renewal application. A complete application the following year with a full review by the Research Foundation is required to obtain a second year of funding.
