Thank you for your interest in UAB’s General Surgery Residency Program!
Our program offers outstanding general surgery training under the guidance of dedicated faculty at one of the largest public hospitals in the world.
We have eight categorical positions offered each year. This includes one Cardiac 4/3 position and one military Active Duty position (offered through the military match).
UAB’s GSRP conducts a holistic review of applications selected for screening and seeks candidates who align with our program's values. There are six main characteristics we look for in our applicants:
- Academically Focused - applicant has passions and interests beyond the OR, i.e. research, health advocacy, bioethics
- Self-Actualizing - applicant displays resilience, is growth-oriented, resourceful, and conscientious
- Hardworking - applicant is motivated to develop skills and become excellent surgeon, applicant understands the value of personal sacrifice for the greater good
- Community Oriented - applicant values teamwork and contributions to the local, regional, and national community
- Intellectual Curiosity - applicant is well-rounded, aware of current events, and motivated to grow and learn
- Enhances UAB’s Culture - applicant brings a unique background and new perspective to the program

- Three Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
- CV
Applicants who interview with the program will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual social the night before their interview, and there will be two in-person second look events available for applicants who wish to visit Birmingham and UAB.
With the exception of military applicants, UAB’s GSRP exclusively utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®) and only reviews MyERAS® applications. Paper or electronic applications will not be accepted. For the 2024 MATCH, signaling our program was a strong predictor of matching at our program. Based upon this data, for the 2025 ERAS® season, applicants that signal our program will be given preference in the initial screening round. Applicants that do not signal our program will only be considered after the initial screen, should additional applicants need to be considered.
Complete applications must be submitted by September 30, 2024, 11:59 PM CT to be screened. See the full application details below for required documents, as well as specifics related to IMG applicants.
Preliminary residents are not considered for categorical PGY-1 positions.
