The General Surgery Residency Program at UAB provides an outstanding clinical experience with many unique opportunities including research participation, extensive robotic surgery training, international training opportunities and more.

Training takes place across five facilities: University Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Alabama and UAB Highlands Hospital. All of these facilities are conveniently located in downtown Birmingham as part of the UAB Medical Center District.

The program has a competitive application cycle and welcomes diverse applicants from across the nation to learn more about our program and apply. Applicants will have the opportunity to meet the chair, program directors, and current residents in both virtual and in-person settings, leading up to interview day. Following introductions and an overview, interviews will be conducted virtually, with each applicant having an individual meeting with the chair and program director. Applicants will also be interviewed by faculty and resident teams and will be asked a mix of standardized guided questions and open questions. When not interviewing, applicants will have the opportunity to chat with our residents and hear more about their perspectives on surgical training at UAB. In addition, our residents host a virtual “night before” event the night prior to interviews to allow applicants to connect with current residents.
