General surgery residents are encouraged to pursue a one- or two-year research fellowship. Mentored opportunities in basic science, clinical and health services research are available. Visit the department's research webpage to explore potential projects and mentors. Program leaders encourage residents begin exploring these options during their intern year, and will help residents identify a primary mentor that is a good match for their interests. Typically research fellowship occurs between the second and third year of residency, but this can be adjusted on a case-by-case basis.
As part of any research fellowship, residents participate in a core curriculum and are expected to submit abstracts and publish manuscripts. Residents also have the opportunity to pursue additional research degrees (e.g. Ph.D., MSPH).
