UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center has partnered with Senior Care Authority to offer UAB employees a new resource for eldercare needs.
TheSenior Care Authority, or SCA, provides guidance to employees with caregiving responsibilities at home, answering common eldercare questions including what local resources may be available, what to look for to ensure quality care, and what assistance is available to help cover the costs associated with care.
“When one is employed full-time and responsible for taking care of children and aging parents, the day-to-day can become overwhelming,” said EACC Director Tami Long, Ph.D.
An initial consultation with one of SCA’s senior advisors is free to UAB employees. Advisors offer personalized assistance in finding local care for an aging parent or loved one and help clients determine which direct and referral services may be appropriate and available to them. Direct services provided by SCA include no-cost placement assistance for assisted living, independent living, and memory care, as well as discounted eldercare consulting and driver self-assessments, and more. Fees may apply for some services.
The partnership with SCA is an extension of the Healthy Aging eldercare education program, which the EACC introduced in 2020.
“We recognized the need to educate aging boomers and caregivers on various eldercare concerns and wanted to provide valuable community resources,” said Long. SCA "will enhance our existing services and help you navigate this sometimes-challenging stage of life.”
