Lanes of traffic on University Boulevard between 16th and 18th streets will be shut down temporarily beginning Dec. 11 for the construction of a new pedestrian crosswalk. The project, which includes new traffic signals, concrete curb modifications, asphalt striping and minor landscaping, is expected to be completed in 12 weeks.
Temporary lane closures will be required to install necessary power for traffic signals and work required in the University Boulevard median. Traffic will be reduced to single lanes in each direction during portions of the project.“UAB is committed to pedestrian safety,” said Denton Lunceford, director in Facilities Planning, Design & Construction. “We have seen the need for a safe crossing at this busy part of campus, and this project will provide that. This construction project will be a short inconvenience that will make the central part of our campus safer.”

The new crosswalk will be a permanent feature, and the pedestrian bridge will reopen when the building renovation is completed in 2018.
10th Avenue closing
A portion of 10th Avenue South between 13th and 16th streets also will be closed to traffic for utility work beginning Monday. The construction, just east of the Snoozy’s parking lot, is part of an ongoing project to expand the District Steam and Chilled Water System campuswide and improve the streetscape.
