Prominent women at UAB will discuss their journeys in pursuit of careers during an International Women’s Day panel noon-1 p.m. March 8 in the INTO lobby in Mervyn Sterne Library.
“When we lend a hand to others like us, we enrich our organizations, empower younger women — including our daughters — and enhance our own position.” |
Suzanne Austin, Ph.D., vice provost for Student and Faculty Successes; Ana Oliveria, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program; Sami Raut, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biology; and Hyeyoung Lim, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, will share their stories and answer questions from the audience.
“As international women, we should never see our differences — be they ethnic, religious, racial, or such — as a weakness or handicaps to success,” said Achala Gunasekara-Rockwell, Ph.D., INTO UAB’s Indian culture and language adviser. “Instead, we should see these factors as tools for success. These elements of our identities are what make us stand out in a crowded field of colleagues and rivals. Polished with education and experience, we shine only brighter, and when we lend a hand to others like us, we enrich our organizations, empower younger women — including our daughters — and enhance our own position.”
