PURPOSE
This is a pilot study to assess the feasibility of performing virtually administered art therapy research, as well as a preliminary study to explore whether calligraphy training affects anxiety levels in healthy individuals with mild to moderate anxiety.

TIME & LOCATION
All meetings and training sessions will be held on Zoom. Participation includes up to a total of 15 hours of time over 12 calendar weeks—an intro meeting, 4 training sessions, a debriefing meeting, and 15 minutes a day of practice--5 days a week for 4 weeks. Pending full recruitment, training classes will be held in January-February 2025.

If you are currently taking antidepressant medications but still struggle with depression, you may qualify for a new clinical research study. The study is evaluating an oral investigational medication for depression that can be taken with your current antidepressant medication. If you smoke cigarettes every day, you may be eligible for a research study with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The research study involves initial online screening, 8 contacts over 6 months and a chance to try varenicline, a prescription smoking cessation medication, or nicotine patches and lozenges. Participants between the ages of 35 and 65 are needed for this study. The purpose of the study is to fill in what we don’t know about how schizophrenia affects people as they get older. We want to find out what we can do to help older individuals with schizophrenia live better lives. The study includes 4 visits over the course of two weeks. The screening visit will take 2 hours. The first study visit will take 3 hours. The second study visit will take 2 hours. The third study visit will take 9 hours. This study will include: a clinical interview, cognitive batteries, questionnaires and assessments related to your daily and psychiatric functioning, two 90 minute MRI scans of your brain, a fasting blood draw, and a urine drug screen and pregnancy test (for females). We're conducting clinical research in depression to learn how individuals’ brain biology impacts response to treatment, with the goal to help people find relief faster. You do not need to already have a diagnosis to participate.

Major Depressive Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by periods of low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. The purpose of this clinical research study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug for Major Depressive Disorder, also known as Major Depression. Study participation may include several clinic visits over a period of up to 5 months with an opportunity to conduct some visits either virtually or in-clinic. Qualified participants will receive compensation for their time.

University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking cigarette smokers who would like to quit smoking for participation in a scientific research study. The research study involves free counseling and treatment provided in a comfortable, supportive setting. The study may involve ingestion of psilocybin, a psychoactive substance found in psychedelic mushrooms that have been used as a sacrament in various cultures. Some research studies have suggested that psychedelics, when administered under interpersonally supportive and well-prepared conditions, may be effective in helping people overcome addictions.

Questionnaires, interviews, and biological measures of smoking will be used to assess the treatment's effects on mood and smoking. Participants will be compensated $50 per session. Confidentiality will be maintained for all applicants and participants.

Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older, and must live within travel distance of the study site in Birmingham.
There is an ongoing psychedelic clinical research study evaluating the safety and efficacy of an intranasal study drug for patients with treatment resistant depression.

To qualify patients need to be 18-75 years of age, failed to respond to an adequate dose & duration of at least 2 medicines for depression. If currently taking antidepressants, willing and able to discontinue.

If eligible, study participants will be expected to abstain from illicit drugs for the duration of the trial & attend all study visits & follow instructions from the study doctor. Study examinations will be at no cost to you.

UAB researchers are looking for adults (ages 25-65) who are suffering from demoralization - feelings of hopelessness or meaninglessness - to participate in a research study evaluating a novel medication.

CURB-2 is an abbreviation we use to refer to this study because there was a similar study completed and published in 2016 called CURB, which stands for Cocaine Use Reduction with Buprenorphine. The results from that study showed that using injectable naltrexone and sublingual buprenorphine was beneficial to participants on high doses of the medication. This study will give injectable naltrexone and injectable buprenorphine to make sure medication doses are consistent to confirm potential benefits.

There are no approved treatments specifically for cocaine use disorder. We are looking for adults (18-65 years of age) who are using cocaine and who are interested in reducing or stopping their use. The purpose of our study is to test a combination of two medications for 2 months as a possible treatment for cocaine use disorder.

This study includes the use of a placebo, which looks like the medication we are testing but does not include any active medicine. Study medication and assessments will be provided to participants at no cost. Participants will receive compensation for their time and efforts.

Do you identify as an individual living with cancer and part of the LGBTQIA+ community or a care partner of someone in this community? A research lab at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is looking to learn about the day-to-day experiences of LGBTQIA+ cancer survivors and their care partners. We are interested in how individuals manage difficult situations related to their respective roles in their relationships. Individuals living with cancer often encounter stressful situations that can impact their mood and any additional stressors from living as a sexual or gender minority with a lack of resources adds an increased risk of experiencing stressful situations. The goal of this work is to develop resources that better support the well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals living with cancer and their care partners. We are enrolling opioid users without a history of psychosis, endocrine diseases, inflammatory diseases, or autoimmune diseases. We are looking for adults between 21-55 years old and diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and use stimulant medication to participate in our study. We want to determine the role of ADHD stimulant medication on balance and other factors, such as physical activity in improving balance performance. We hypothesize that ADHD will improve balance performance in adults with ADHD. We also hypothesize that moderate to vigorous physical activity behaviors will positively influence balance performance in this population. Participants will be required to make two visits. Once on-medication; and on the second visit, we will ask participants to forgo ADHD medication 24 hours before the testing.
