Program gives faculty tools to expand service-learning

UAB’s Faculty Fellows in Engaged Scholarship program provides a one-year fellowship — structured around a year-long series of workshops — to help faculty design a new course or to modify an existing course to include a service-learning component.

The workshops explore theories, implementation and assessment of academic service-learning and ways to integrate this into courses across the disciplines.

The fellowship also provides a $1,500 grant to support course development and research, and fellows will have assistance and support of UAB’s service-learning coordinators during course implementation.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of current and former Faculty Fellows in Engaged Scholarship. Six to 10 faculty will be selected and will be announced by the end of May.

Direct questions to Libba Vaughan, director of UAB Office of Service Learning, libbav@uab.edu or 996-7080.
