The UAB Presidential Faculty Scholars awards honor exceptional, highly funded faculty members at the Associate Professor level or higher. These scholars have received the Growth with Purpose-Faculty Recruitment Fund (GWP FRF) from the Office of the President. Their research programs align with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s strategic priorities outlined in the ‘Growth with Purpose’ plan.
The title ‘UAB Presidential Faculty Scholar’ may continue to be used as long as the awardee remains a full-time faculty member at UAB in good standing.

Statement of Purpose
The GWP FRF is intended to augment recruitment packages for outstanding, highly funded faculty members ranked at the Associate Professor level or higher. These state monies are intended to foster economic growth as assessed by increased extramural support to UAB and by an increase in research employees who are supported, in part or whole, by extramural resources.

Intent of the GWP FRF
In general, the GWP FRF should be prioritized for recruiting outstanding, highly funded faculty members who have programs aligned with the research priorities established by the University of Alabama at Birmingham through the ‘Growth with Purpose’ strategic plan. The GWP FRF will be administered by the Office of the President and will be available to all UAB schools & college supporting the goals and objectives identified in ‘Growth with Purpose’ strategic plan.

Application Process
What applications will be considered?
Applications focused on the recruitment of outstanding, highly funded faculty members. Faculty recruits with existing and transferable funding will be given top priority.
Application Criteria
Applications will be considered for recruitment of individuals:
- who are at the Associate Professor or higher faculty level and have current extramural support.
- have funding from NIH, NSF, or other entities identified in the ‘Growth with Purpose’ strategic plan, have a demonstrated record of research productivity and outstanding potential for generating continued extramural support.
Applications Should Include:
- the GWP FRF application form submitted by the Dean of the School/College
- the curriculum vitae of the faculty member who is being recruited and, if applicable, letters of commitment of matching support from individuals other than the applicant.
Application Submission
Application Submission The requesting department fills out the online application (attach link here), which is then routed to the Dean's office for approval. Once approved, the form is submitted to Chandni Khadka, the Project Director of Strategic Initiatives, at
ckhadka@uab.edu .f the requesting individual currently has a uabmc.edu email address, they will need to request Teams Access for UABMC users in order to complete this application. This is a one-time license request, and if they have previously requested a Teams license, they will not need to do this again.

Applications will be considered by the ‘GWP’ Investment Committee (Dr. Ray Watts, Dr. Anupam Agarwal, Mr. Tom Brannan, Dr. Chris Brown, Dr. Brian Burnett, and Dr. Janet Woodruff-Borden). The Project Director of Strategic Initiatives, Chandni Khadka will manage the administration of the review process.
Award Notification
The applying Dean and Administrator will receive a notice of the GWP FRF award from the Office of the President. Account set up information will be included in the notice of award.
Accounting Requirements
An account should be established for the GWP FRF award. To activate the award, a GWP FRF account set-up form should be submitted to
FinAccounting@uab.edu .Available Funding
The Office of the President will contribute up to 25% of the total recruitment package. For example, if the total recruitment package is $1M, the Office of the President will provide up to 25% or $250,000. The maximum available from the GWP FRF is $1M per faculty recruit.
Reporting Requirements
A GWP FRF award progress report is to be completed upon expending 75% total of both the GWP FRF account and Match account. Funds will not be transferred from the Office of the President without the submission of a progress report to the Project Director of Strategic Initiatives at
ckhadka@uab.edu .

UAB Presidential Faculty Scholar Class of 2024-2025

Jenny J. Yang
Dr. Jenny J. Yang will join UAB within the Division of Hematology and Oncology in the Department of Medicine. Jenny is currently a Permanent Regents’ Professor (since 2016) and Distinguished University Scholar (since 2013) in the Department of Chemistry, at Georgia State University.

Zhi-Ren Liu
Dr. Zhi-Ren Liu currently is a Distinguished University Professor (since 2014) and Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar (since 2003) in Department of Biology, Georgia State University.

John F. Engelhardt
John F. Engelhardt, Ph.D., is highly regarded for his research focused on the molecular basis of cystic fibrosis (CF) disease pathologies and on the development of gene therapies for this disorder.
