The information gathered during this study will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. The research staff will take special precautions to protect your confidentiality.
All results will be kept confidential, but may be made available to you. Only a participation number will identify the information collected on you. A master sheet that links the names of individuals with code numbers will be kept in a locked filing cabinet that can only be accessed by the investigators. This master sheet will be destroyed when the need to identify information by participants has passed. Blood samples collected at the beginning and end of the study will be labeled with a code number and stored for analysis and future research. Only investigators closely associated on the project will know the name attached to the sample.
As part of the gardening intervention, a Facebook website is available for survivors and master gardeners to communicate. This will be a closed website and only study participants and master gardeners will be able to gain access. However, security breaches are always possible and therefore we cannot absolutely guarantee confidentiality should you decide to take advantage of this service.
The results of this study will be shared only in the form of anonymous information on large groups of participants. Research information that identifies you may be shared with the UAB Institutional Review Board (IRB) and others who are responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations related to research, including people on behalf of the UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences and the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
