    • Who is eligible to go on a trip?

UAB students, staff, faculty, alumni, and people not affiliated with UAB. UAB students have priority for all trips. A CRCT membership is not required. General public can only register for a trip the month after fall classes start. Participants not associated with UAB pay a higher rate to be involved on these trips. All participants must be available for the scheduled pre-trip meetings.

    • How do I sign-up?

To register for a trip participants must complete a trip wavier and pay the registration fee. The registration fee for a trip is the full cost of the trip, or a minimum $250 deposit. The balance is due at the pre-trip meeting. Trip sign up is in room 290 of the Campus Recreation Center or call outdoor pursuits office 205-996-4913.

    • If I need to cancel from a trip, is there a refund policy?

Because reservations are made in advance and deposits are paid often well in advance, reductions in trip numbers may cause the loss of deposits or cancellation fees. In addition there is administrative cost in having a University check cut.

      • 75% of trip payment will be refunded to participants 14 days or more prior to trip departure
      • 50% of trip payment will be refunded to participants 5-13 days or more prior to trip departure
      • NO REFUND will be provided to participants less than 4 days prior to trip departure
      • NO REFUND will be provided to participants after the pre- trip meeting on a trip over $250
      • Should a trip get canceled by UAB Outdoor Adventures, then a full refund or trip credit will be issued to the participant.
    • Why go on a trip?

Individuals participate for a variety of reasons. Reasons vary from a break from school to doing something different, or meeting different people, to learning new skills. A highlight for most people on our trips is interacting with other individuals in the group. Many friendships have begun on these trips.

    • How physically demanding are these trips?

Most of our trips are geared towards the beginner enthusiast. Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation. We cannot understate the physical nature of the trips. Day hikes are a great introduction to the trip program and also speaking to the trip leaders will give you a better idea of the physical preparation needed for each trip. Being physically prepared adds to the overall enjoyment of the trip.

    • When are the pre-trip meetings scheduled?

Pre-trip meetings are typically scheduled at 6 PM on the Tuesday night before the scheduled departure of the trip. All meetings will be held in CRCT290. Longer and more involved trips may meet on an earlier Tuesday. Pre-trip meetings are very important for the success of the group. Please make arrangements so you can be at the pre-trip meeting.

    • What is included in the trip fee?

The trip fees are intended to pay for: transportation, camping fees, park entry fees, maps, misc. supplies, use of group gear (sleeping bags, tents, stoves, water filters, first aid, and cook kits) and activity equipment (kayaks, canoes, backpacks, climbing gear). Our ski trips that include airfare do not include ski rental. Personal clothing and food are not included.

    • What is the Campus Rec Member price policy?

Current CRCT members (household members, etc.) receive the student price for each trip. Unless listed as open only to specific student groups.

    • How do I know what to pack?

Trips include most personal and group technical equipment. All you need to provide is your personal clothing and boots for hiking trips. Pack list are provided at the pre-trip meeting.
