The University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business has named accounting professor Arline Savage, Ph.D. opens a new website , chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance.
“Dr. Savage is a world-renowned scholar and teacher who has had a significant impact on our school for the past decade through her extraordinary teaching, research, and leadership,” said Christopher Shook, Ph.D., dean of the Collat School of Business. “We are delighted that she will now use her extensive knowledge and industry connections to take our accounting and finance programs to new levels.”
Savage joined UAB in 2012 from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo and previously served as chair of Collat’s Department of Accounting and Finance from 2014-2018. In 2021, she received the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She also was appointed the first Sallie W. Dean Endowed Professor of Accounting in 2023.
A prolific scholar, Savage’s research has been published in the Journal of Accounting Education, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Forensic Accounting Research, Global Perspectives on Accounting Education, Journal of Business Ethics, Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management, Strategic Finance, CPA Journal, and Journal of Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business, among others. In 2022, she partnered with two of her former UAB students to co-author the book Accounting Information Systems: Connecting Careers, Systems, and Analytics.
Savage, a South African native, has taught accounting classes internationally. She previously received the Ernst & Young Leader in Ethics Award, the Ernst & Young Outstanding Education Award, the Fluor Corporation Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Loudell Teaching Award.
Savage received her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in accounting from the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela University) in 1977, 1996, and 1999, respectively. A world-renowned researcher, she ranked 12th in the world in accounting education. She has published more than 40 academic and professional publications as well as two scholarly books and two textbooks. She is a past president of the Accounting Information Systems Educator Association and founding editor-in-chief of the AIS Educator Journal.
