Experiential Learning Requirement and Internships
What is the Experiential Learning Requirement?
All degree-seeking students in the Collat School of Business are required to engage in one of several options for an Experiential Learning credit. You should work with your academic advisor to determine which option is the best fit for you. Learn more about the experiential learning requirement.
Is an internship required to earn a business degree?
An internship is not required to earn a business degree. However, an experiential learning credit is required. An internship is a very popular way to satisfy the experiential learning requirement.
How do I get approved to take the internship class?
All business majors should contact their departmental internship coordinator to learn about approval for the internship credit.
What will satisfy the experiential learning requirement?
There are several options to satisfy the experiential learning requirement such as internships, service learning classes, research, the business honors program, and more.

Talk with your academic advisor and Collat Career Services about the best time for you to have an internship.
How do I learn about internship opportunities?

If I already have a job can I use that as my internship?
If you already have a job that gives you experience in your career goals, talk with your academic advisor and the internship coordinator to see if that experience can satisfy the experiential requirement. This will vary by department and major. In the Collat School of Business, we believe it is important to graduate with both a degree and practical experience that will make you more competitive in the job market.

Each major in the Collat School of Business has a major specific advisor. Business majors start seeing their major advisor in their second year at UAB. Collat business freshman work with a freshman success advisor. Transfer students start with a transfer to business advisor. Find your advisor.

Do business students have their own career center?
Yes! The Collat School of Business is very fortunate to have a dedicated career center just for its business students.

It is best to start interacting with the Collat Career Center office as soon as possible!
Can I attend the career fair my first year at Collat?
Yes. It is great to get involved and network from the first day that you step onto campus!

Collat Majors and Business Curriculum
What are the Collat concentration options?
It is important to talk with your academic advisor about what concentration might be right for you. Not all majors offer concentrations. Find more information about our majors and concentrations.
What are the minimum grades required in lower-level business classes?
Try your best in all classes! However, all lower level business classes require a C or better. These classes are BUS 101/102, BUS 110, AC 200*, AC 201, LS 246, QM 214 and QM 215.
*Accounting majors must make a B or better in AC 200 in order to continue as a student in that major.
What are the minimum grades required in upper level business classes?
Each major has different requirements. It is always a good rule of thumb to know that if you are taking a class that is a prerequisite for another class, the minimum grade is a C or better. Check with your academic advisor or the UAB undergraduate catalog opens a new website for your major requirements.

Am I required to have a minor in the Collat School of Business?

What minors are available for business majors?
Business majors may minor in anything available to most undergraduate students at UAB. The only minor NOT available for business majors is Business Administration.
Why can’t I minor in Business Administration as a business major?
The Business Administration minor is created for students that are not majoring in business and requires classes that are not specific to individual majors in business.
What classes do I need to take for my major?
The best way to find out about what classes to take in your specific major is to talk with your academic advisor.
